A Body Powered arm prosthesis is so-described because it is operated with body power alone, and is not externally powered, like a Myoelectric Prostheses. Body powered prostheses are either Voluntary Opening or Voluntary Closing. A wide range of Terminal Devices can be used with the prosthesis.
Older, particularly anthromorphic or hand-shaped arms were sometimes manufactured as complete products, that were inseparable as terminal devices. The Carnes Artificial Arm, with components patented in 1904 and 1912, was manufactured in Kansas City.
