Dan Frey, Larry Carlson, and Vidya Ramaswamy developed several devices based on an interesting concept together, and published [WWW]a paper about the device.

Despite the good idea, in which the adjusting button shown in the pictures below changes the angle of the tension band, allowing adjustment of the closing force, they were unable to get a patent because of the existence of a 1954 German patent (reference needed).

The inventors have graciously allowed us to try to further the development of the device, and have given us a bunch of documentation, which we are publishing here in the hopes that a volunteer might be interested in working on it.

This [WWW]zip file contains everything we have on the Vector, including legacy CAD files in CADKEY that might be importable into PRO/E or SolidWorks, the patent application, and other documents.

Dr. Carlson loaned us the Vector Grip, which we took apart and will post detailed pictures of, and we will do the same with the hook, which Dr. Frey has loaned us.

A goal of the project might be to figure out the least expensive way to implement either of the two Vector ideas, including the manufacture of a kit that might work with currently available hooks.

Please post comments and let us know what you are doing if you start work on this project. The images on this page are taken from a presentation by Dr. Carlson that is available [WWW]here.
